Kids’ Slot Word: Being A Servant

  1. Ask what they think a servant is.
  2. Place a large sheet of paper in the center, ask each member to draw something a servant might do.
  3. Talk about these examples. Discuss what it might be like to do these things. e.g. boring/exciting; would they like to do it?
  4. Talk about different attitudes the servants could have as they performed their duties, e.g. happy, fed up, grumpy, willing.
  5. Ask them, “Who was the greatest servant of all?” (Jesus)
  6. Ask a child to read Matthew 12:18a.
  7. Read Matthew 12:18a again. Ask them what they think about Jesus being a King and a servant.
  8. Ask how they think Jesus was a servant. Write their answers on the paper.
  9. Ask them to mime the thing they wrote, showing Jesus’ attitude as He did it. The rest of the group should guess what He was doing and how, e.g. smiling when healing; loving when washing feet; hugging when the children came to Him.

  2. Read: “Think of yourselves the way Christ Jesus thought of himself. He didn’t claim special privileges. He lived a selfless, obedient life and then died - a crucifixion” Philippians 2:5-8 (Message).
  3. Ask each child to hold their paper, stand, and pray that they would be like Jesus as they do the thing they described.
